De courgette behoort tot de komkommerachtigen en is familie van de pompoen, komkommer en meloen.
Het is een zeer oud cultuurgewas en komt oorspronkelijk uit Zuid-Amerika. Pas sinds de zestiende eeuw kent Europa de courgette.
Het woord ‘courgette’ komt uit het frans: het verkleinwoord van ‘courge’, dat pompoen betekent, en wordt ook wel eens zomerpompoen genoemd.
In tegenstelling tot de pompoen is de courgette geen kruipplant, maar toch kan deze behoorlijk veel ruimte in beslag nemen. De grote bladeren van de courgetteplant zijn behaard, stekelig en ruw.
Er zijn heldergroene, donkergroene, witte en gele courgettes; ook bolvormige courgettes bestaan.
De bloem van de courgette kan ook gegeten worden en is een ware delicatesse.
